Why Facebook Brand Engagement is Plummeting

Posted on Thursday, October 9, 2014 in Online Marketing, PMA Blogroll, Social Media

The basis for the the title of this article is based on a theory which I don’t believe has reached mainstream media yet. While Facebook can be a great medium for raising brand awareness and developing affinity relationships, it seems that the very thing that has made Facebook more popular than ever will someday lead to its demise.

DATELINE: June 2012–Facebook is faced with extremely disappointing stock values following their IPO.  Investors are restless and demand that the leaders of Facebook  ”figure out mobile” with respect to their popular ad platform which performed very well on desktop computers and is the source of the company’s revenue.

Zuckerberg delivers and delivers big.  The team at Facebook launch their new mobile ad platform and ad sales skyrocket.  Investors are thrilled, everyone now runs Facebook ads and “Likes” of pages increase dramatically–at an even faster pace than traditional desktop ads.

DATELINE: August 2013–Facebook institutes an algorithm change which impacts the position of page content in a user’s newsfeed.  Engagement starts to dip.

DATELINE: December 2013–Facebook implements another change in algorithm which reduces brand engagement by 44%.  Brands respond by increasing the number of posts in hopes of regaining traction which only propagates the decline.

PRESENT DAY:  Facebook ads are still going strong because they’ve done an even better job of zeroing in on user’s data, their likes and dislikes and are now presenting ads which appeal better to users than ever before.  Yet, engagement is plummeting–true for both small brands and large.  Why?  Because Facebook got too good at selling ads and generating revenue.

WHY IT’S A PROBLEM:  Since Facebook has become so good at selling advertising on mobile and increasing their stock price, common users now “Like” too many brands! According to Facebook, users spend an average of 40 minutes per day on their website.  So, if we take an average user who has been keenly bombarded with targeted ads over the last two years and now literally “Likes” hundreds of brands–how can that user possibly engage with any one brand during any given day?

The numbers just don’t add up–Facebook is self consuming itself and will soon be a victim of its own success.  The more ads they sell, the more each user “Likes” a new brand, which simply translates into less and less propensity to see that brand’s post and engage with it.  It’s impossible and will only further spiral out of control.
